Duty to Consult (DTC)

The Duty to Consult reflects the Crown’s legal obligation to engage with Indigenous Nations when proposed decisions or activities may impact Aboriginal or treaty rights. It ensures that Indigenous perspectives are considered early and meaningfully in planning and decision-making processes.

At the Saugeen Ojibway Nation Environment Office, the Duty to Consult helps guide how we review and respond to proposed activities within SON Territory. This includes assessing potential impacts to lands, waters, rights, and interests; and helping ensure that consultation is carried out in a way that is respectful, informed, and consistent with SON priorities.

The slides below provide an overview of what the Duty to Consult means and how it relates to the work of the Environment Office.
