About the Coastal Waters Monitoring Program
The Coastal Waters Monitoring Program (CWMP) is a long-term environmental monitoring initiative focused on increasing knowledge and understanding of nearshore areas within SON Territory. The program conducts field-based sampling at locations across the Territory to assess water quality and document fish, plant, and invertebrate communities. CWMP also supports community engagement, research, and training activities that strengthen stewardship and monitoring capacity.
Position Overview
The program will be based out of the SON Environment Offices in Wiarton and will involve daily travel within the SON Territory and occasional overnight stays. All necessary training will be provided to CWMP Technicians including (but not limited to), fish identification, assessment methods and proper use of field equipment, data collection and entry, and health and safety protocols. Successful candidates will be enrolled in Marine First Aid, Boat Operation and Safety Training (MED-A3 and SVOP) and completion of these courses will be required prior to beginning field work.
Required Experience:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must have a valid Ontario class “G2” driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
- Must be physically fit (able to carry equipment and work outside all day) (ability to lift 50 pounds)
- Willingness to provide the results of a Criminal Background Check
Recommended Experience:
- Experience or interest in operating boats and conducting water, fish and wildlife assessments.
- Working knowledge of, or willingness to develop skills in Microsoft office (Word and Excel).
- Minimum 1 year of experience working within an Indigenous community
Job Description:
- Experience and/or strong interest in boat operating, water, fish and wildlife monitoring
- Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Enjoy, and are capable of working in adverse weather conditions and working long, physically demanding and varied hours in remote locations.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft office (Word and Excel).
- Desire to learn and passion for sharing information with community, partners, youth groups etc.
- Willingness to take all reasonable and necessary precautions to ensure personal health & safety and that of coworkers
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective communication, reliability, and problem solving
- Proven ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships
- Ability to take direction from Manager and/or Lead Environmental Technician(s) and uphold environmental monitoring and recording protocols
- Ensuring that all Fish and Wildlife encountered during monitoring are treated with respect and care
