Diesel Spill in Hope Bay

NOTICE TO SON MEMBERS

hope bay spill

We are writing to inform community members of a diesel spill in Hope Bay. Contamination is affecting the waters of Hope Bay.

This is of serious concern as Hope Bay, and its connected creeks, are important areas where SON members carry out traditional activities like harvesting smelt.

At this time, we are advising all members to exercise caution and limit contact with the water and shoreline in this area.

Diesel contamination poses risks to the fish, the aquatic habitat, and to human health. We are actively monitoring the situation and seeking comprehensive information on the containment and cleanup efforts.

Protecting our waters, fisheries, and rights remains a top priority. We will continue to advocate for immediate action and accountability to be taken.

If you have recently been in the area and have observed impacts (such as sheen on the water, strong odours, or affected wildlife), please contact the Environment Office.
