About the Coastal Waters Monitoring Program
The Coastal Waters Monitoring Program (CWMP) is a long-term environmental monitoring initiative focused on increasing knowledge and understanding of nearshore areas within SON Territory. The program conducts field-based sampling at locations across the Territory to assess water quality and document fish, plant, and invertebrate communities. CWMP also supports community engagement, research, and training activities that strengthen stewardship and monitoring capacity.
Position Overview
Environmental Technicians with CWMP can expect a balance of physically active fieldwork and indoor tasks. Fieldwork involves full days outdoors in varying weather conditions, while indoor work includes data entry, equipment maintenance, and care of shared workspaces. On days when fieldwork is not feasible, staff will focus on data management, gear repair, training, or community engagement activities.
The position is based out of the SON Environment Office in Wiarton and includes daily travel throughout SON Territory, with occasional overnight stays.
Training and Certification
All necessary training will be provided, including (but not limited to):
- Fish identification and assessment methods
- Proper use of field and monitoring equipment
- Data collection and data entry
- Health and safety protocols
Successful candidates will be required to complete Marine First Aid, Boat Operation and Safety Training (MED-A3 and SVOP) prior to beginning fieldwork.
Required Qualifications
- One year of experience in boat operation and water, fish, or wildlife monitoring
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle
- Physically fit and able to work outdoors for extended periods (ability to lift up to 50 lbs)
- Willingness to provide a Criminal Background Check
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum one (1) year of experience working within an Indigenous community
- Experience working with statistical coding programs
- Experience with R programming for data analysis and visualization
- Experience with ArcGIS software

Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision - Comfortable working long, physically demanding, and varied hours in remote locations and adverse weather
