Student/Seasonal Environmental Technician

The Coastal Waters Monitoring Program (CWMP) is a long-term environmental monitoring project focused on increasing our collective knowledge and understanding of the health of the coastal areas of the SON Territory. The Program includes sampling locations across the Territory to identify fish, wetlands/aquatic vegetation, macrobenthic invertebrates, and assess water quality. Those interested in employment in this program can expect full days outdoors in a variety of conditions and physically active work. Days where field work is not feasible, will be spent entering data, repairing gear and equipment, or taking part in training. The Program will be based out of Wiarton and will involve daily travel within the SON Territory. First Aid and Boat Operation and Safety Training (MED-A3 and SVOP) will be provided.
Required Experience:
Must be 16 years of age or older
Must have a valid Ontario class ‘G’ or ‘G2” Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle
Must be physically fit (able to carry equipment and work outside all day)
Willingness to provide the results of a Criminal Background Check
Recommended Experience:
Minimum 1 year working within an Indigenous community

Job Description:
- Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Willingness to take all reasonable and necessary precautions to ensure personal health & safety and that of coworkers
- Experience or Interest in operating boats and performing water, fish and wildlife monitoring
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective communication, reliability, and problem solving
- Proven ability to develop and maintain positive working relationship
- Ability to take direction from Lead Environmental Technician(s) and uphold environmental monitoring and recording protocols. Upholding health & safety practices and protocols in order to keep yourself and others safe
- Communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect
- Ensuring that all Fish and Wildlife encountered during monitoring are treated with respect and care
