Employment Type: Part-Time (PT) Casual (on-call) to begin, potential for regular hours in the future
Duration:  4 to 6 months to begin, possibility of extension
        
Job Summary
Saugeen Ojibway Nation is seeking motivated and detail-oriented Monitor(s) to support ongoing consultation for large projects. The ideal candidate will play a vital role in collecting and compiling information thorough field data collection, literature reviews, and assisting with various research-related activities. This position is designed to support projects that advance SON sovereignty and contribute to informed decision-making.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
 

1. Fieldwork 

  • Training / apprenticeship: Initially, monitor will be trained by and will accompany experienced SON ecologist(s) to conduct fieldwork.
  • Data Collection: Conduct scheduled field surveys and collect environmental or site-specific data using established protocols and equipment. Survey types may include ecological land classification (ELC), breeding and/or migratory birds, herpetofauna, botanical surveys, road mortality monitoring, avian window fatality and/or setting up and monitoring equipment (e.g., wildlife cameras, barbed wire hair sampling traps, automated recording units).
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed field logs, record observations, and ensure accurate measurement of variables.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and community guidelines during all field activities.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with team members and partners to plan and execute field activities.

2. Data Compilation

  • Data Management: Organize, input, and manage field data using spreadsheets, databases, or other data management tools.
  • Quality Assurance: Review and verify the accuracy and consistency of collected data.
  • Reporting: Generate preliminary data summaries and analytical reports to support project assessments and decision-making.

3. Literature Reviews (Potential, depending on experience and specific project needs)

  • Research: Conduct comprehensive reviews of academic, technical, grey literature and citizen/community science data related to the research topics.
  • Synthesis: Summarize key findings, trends, and gaps in the literature, and prepare concise reports, presentations and/or mapping.
  • Documentation: Maintain annotated bibliographies and ensure all information sources are correctly referenced.

4. Other Research-Related Activities (Potential, depending on experience and specific project needs)

  • Methodology Support: Assist in the development and refinement of research methodologies and protocols.
  • Report Writing: Contribute to drafting research reports, proposals, and policy briefs as needed.
  • Meetings and Presentations: Participate in team meetings, community consultations, and project briefings to communicate research progress and findings.

Preferred Qualifications and Skill Sets

  • Education:
    -Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field, 
    AND/OR 
    Demonstrated experience (professional, volunteer and/or personal) and knowledge of  ecology, flora, fauna and/or stewardship of the Land (combined with technical skills described below)
    AND/OR
    A demonstrated strong interest to learn.
    -A Master’s degree or relevant field experience is an asset.

 

  • Technical Skills (preferred, but not essential):
    -Demonstrated experience in field research and data collection methods.
    -Proficiency in data management software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, R, or similar tools).
    -Familiarity with literature search engines and academic databases.
    -Familiarity with on-line natural heritage and land use databases and mapping tools (e.g., MNRF Make-A-Map, Bruce County Maps, Google Earth Pro).
    -Familiarity with citizen / community science programs, applications and databases (e.g., iNaturalist, NatureCounts, eBird, Ontario Reptile and Amphibian Atlas, eButterfly).
    -Field identification skills (e.g., vascular and/or non-vascular plants including Anishinaabe medicines and culturally important species, birds, herpetofauna, mammals and/or invertebrates) and a passion for Nature are definite assets. 
    -GIS (e.g., ArcInfo) experience an asset.
     
  • Analytical & Communication Skills:
    -Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and summarize quantitative and qualitative data.
    -Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and presentations.
     
  • Personal Attributes:
    -Understanding and appreciation of Anishinaabe values and teachings, particularly with respect to stewardship of the Lands and Waters.
    -Detail-oriented and organized, with a high level of accuracy in data handling.
    -Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
    -Flexibility to work in varying field conditions and travel to project sites as required.
    -Past or ongoing involvement with land-based learning, community/citizen science initiatives, nature conservation or ecological restoration projects a definite asset.

Training and Mentorship Considerations

  • On-the-Job Training:
    Comprehensive training in field data collection methods, safety protocols, and equipment handling will be provided.
    Orientation on data management procedures and software tools.
     
  • Mentorship:
    Guidance and support from senior researchers and project managers will be available to enhance professional development.
    Opportunities to attend workshops or training sessions relevant to the research focus.

Estimated Duration and Workload Expectations

  • Workload:
    This is a casual / occasional (“as needed”) position to start.
    Estimated up to 30 hours per week with the possibility of additional hours during peak fieldwork or reporting periods.
    Flexibility required to accommodate project timelines and field conditions.
     
  • Duration:
    This is a contract position expected to run for up to 6 months with the potential for extension based on project funding and performance.
Salary
$300/day + $25/day for mileage if travelling more than 100km (one way)
