Resource and Infrastructure Associate

**Priority given to Saugeen Ojibway Nation Members

The Resources and Infrastructure Associate (RIA) acts as the lead contact for the analysis of potential environmental impact of proposed development or land-use changes on SON’s Indigenous rights and interests in the SON Territory. RIAs are responsible for screening all requests for consultation or comment from federal, provincial and municipal government approval ministries and/or departments. Specifically, this includes municipal land use planning applications, aggregate extraction licenses, permits to take water, municipal class impact assessments for infrastructure, natural gas pipeline development, hydro electrical power lines, provincial highway development, and any other proposed development that requires approval by municipal or Crown regulating entities. 

Supervisor: Resource and Infrastructure Manager

Accountable to: Senior Manager / Joint Chiefs and Councils of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation

Term of Employment: Full-time - Permanent

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week (Monday-Friday | Some weekends and evenings may be required).

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the support to the Resources and Infrastructure Manager and be the secondary point of contact for natural resource and infrastructure development activities within the SON Territory. 
  • Support in the review and organization of all incoming project notifications regarding new projects, existing projects, permits and approvals processes and applicable policy/law changes regarding the potential impact on SON Aboriginal and treaty rights, environment of the Territory, and areas of cultural/archaeological significance.
  • Ensure that all meetings and processes are documented.
  • Ensure SON’s Aboriginal and treaty rights, interests and concerns are addressed through duty to consult process
  • Utilize GIS applications to track and analyze potential ecological/cultural impacts of proposed projects / activities.
  • Work productively with Environment Office team members, SON Joint Council members and committees, proponents, government and non-government agencies, legal and other key individuals.
  • Provide technical expertise.
  • Provide technical expertise to other portfolios such as required.
  • Attend workshops, conferences and other professional development opportunities to build on ecological, technical and legislative knowledge.
  • Provide receptionist coverage as required.
  • Adhere to all SON policies & procedures, including Health & Safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrate good judgment.
  • Respect the confidentiality of SON, the community and employee information.
  • Deal professionally & courteously with all internal & external contacts.
  • Seek guidance / direction as necessary in the performance of duties.
  • Act as an ambassador for SON at all times.
  • General administrative duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.
     

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Natural Resources Management / Environmental Science or related field
  • PLUS minimum 2 years’ experience working in related field

    OR

  • Equivalent 5 years’ minimum experience in related fields.

    ADDITIONALLY

  • Experience working with or within First Nations governments, or Municipal/Provincial/Federal governments.
  • Experience using GIS applications considered an asset*
  • In-depth understanding of SON Territory, rights, interests, and culture.
  • Driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle
